Welcome to the third edition of Weekly Lessons, hosted every Wednesday by Mattie of Northwest Native and myself. We are so excited for you to join!
You know those weeks where you just feel off? Yep, I’m having one of those. I think it’s a mix between being sick, feeling lonely, watching too much Orange is the New Black, and reflecting too much about September, which has been a strange month for me the last several years. Anyway, writer’s block hit me while trying to create this post and after an unsuccessful hour coming up with this week’s lessons (the best I could think of was how much my six-hour roundtrip drive to San Francisco airport sucked when we live 10 minutes from the Sacramento one), I closed my eyes to gather my thoughts.
I couldn’t help remembering one of my dad’s life lessons that suddenly got me thinking.
Now, my dad has quite a few life lessons. He is, after all, a life coach. When I’m feeling down, I call him and ask to speak with Coach Baker, who always gives valuable insight and tells the hard truth. He’d also win against Tim Kaine in a super-dad contest any day with his jokes and cheesy life lessons (this is one of them).
When I was fourteen or fifteen, my dad excitedly told me an epiphany that I want to share with you today.
Finding your passion in life is like adding the milk to Rice Krispies in a bowl.
“What?” I replied. “How do those two things have anything to do with each other?”
My dad expected this response and proceeded to ask me, “Well, what happens when you add the milk to Rice Krispies cereal?”
I hesitated, unsure where he was heading with this, and answered the obvious, “Snap, crackle, pop.”
“Exactly!” he triumphantly exclaimed. “You see, we try to find the thing that makes us come alive–makes us snap, crackle, and pop. It’s that passion in life that gets us excited and motivated to take action and succeed. Passion is the ingredient to life like milk is for Rice Krispies.”
He has a point, right? If we don’t have a passion in life, we tend to fall into a comfort-zone routine. As I work on figuring out my place here in Sacramento, I think about the Rice Krispies analogy. What is my passion that makes me snap, crackle, and pop? Is it my blog, my writing, my career? I love every one of those, yet I think about my sister who has such a fiery passion for theatre to the point of living and breathing it each and every day… I wish I’ve committed such life dedication to something like that. Or is it Jake and our future together? As much as I know that’s the most important thing in my life, I also realize I need my own passion–like Jake has golf, or my sister has theatre. I don’t know, it’s a weird feeling… an unanswered question, if you will, that I realize I need to solidify in order to figure out some things here in Sacramento.
What is your milk to make life snap, crackle, pop? What are you passionate about?
