Hashtags are so important in today’s social marketing, digital engagement, and target audience outreach. If you haven’t jumped on the #BandWagon yet, no offence but you’re only hurting yourself at this point. We’re all in agreement they are ugly and there’s an overwhelming amount of “official” brand hashtags. On the other hand, they are so damn useful for anyone who expects to have any sort of social media presence. And pssst, here’s a secret: social media presence means everything these days.
“Hashtag” even seems to be taking over the younger generation’s use of the word “pound” in reference to #. Proof? My parents and I pulled up to my college sister’s gated apartment complex and we needed the passcode, so I called her. This is how the conversation went.
Me: “What’s the passcode to get in?”
Nikki: “It’s hashtag one-five-three-nine.”
Me: “Hashtag? You mean pound?”
Nikki: “Hashtag, pound. Same thing. Just hashtag in.”
(FYI, this isn’t my sister’s real passcode. I’m not that stupid to announce it on the internet, so cool your jets) Has anyone else ever had a similar conversation with a younger person? I later asked her why she says “hashtag” instead of “pound.”
Her answer: “Because I’ve told people the passcode saying ‘pound,’ but they ask me what that means. So I say ‘hashtag’ and then they understand. It just became habit to use that word instead.”
The good news is my sister knows what the symbol is officially called. The bad news is that too many of her peers do not, so she feels like she must resort to the modern name of the symbol.
Guys, this is only the beginning. We live in an increasingly digital world and hashtags are a frontrunner.
Which brings me to my upcoming mini blog series, Happy #Hashtagging, and I need your help to make it a success!
What you can do
I am looking for all customized hashtags.
This primarily applies to Instagram because that’s where we use hashtags the most, but this mini blog series is not exclusive.
Do you know someone who has a hashtag of their own? Do they feature hashtag users, run a contest, host a challenge, provide special incentive? If you can think of any blogger or brand—or even yourself!—who has a hashtag that fits the above, PLEASE share with me. I want to compile these hashtags into a post, so it can serve as a hashtag resource for each of you!
Comment below, send me an email, tweet me a message—whichever way you prefer, please point me in the direction of hashtags that can benefit us all. #letsbelivin is a prime example and I know there are many others out there similar to it. I hope we can all benefit from these great opportunities and further connect with the blogging community! However, we can’t utilize them until we know what they are.
So, please, help me know what they are. Let’s make this happen together! Share this post and spread the word on your social media accounts! The bigger outreach, the more hashtags, the greater opportunities!
