As new bloggers, we devour tips and advice about building a successful blog—there is so much information, strategies, and methods out there to the point of overwhelm. A common and important advice phrase is something along the lines of “build a blog network” and “join the blogging community.” While they are helpful reminders, they’re also really daunting, big tasks with a whole realm of possibilities!
I’m new at blogging and I’m figuring this out as I go. I love to experiment with various strategies, I do my best to learn from my mistakes, and I’m in the process of establishing productively good habits. This is just as new for me as it is for you. It is exhilarating to recognize and understand patterns that directly create results, leading to exponential growth I did not believe possible (see Increase Your Social Media Following By 200% for more information!). I want to share my learning journey with other bloggers, especially those who are also in the beginning stages of establishing a blog. After all, it takes a village to build a successful blog.
So let’s get into the nitty gritty details about how to build your blog network. I’ve deconstructed the big piece of advice into smaller tasks, habits, and strategies so it does not feel quite as overwhelming.
Reach out to other bloggers.
Do you see yourself writing a guest post on a particular blog you stumbled across? Send them an email and ask! Are you hoping to partner with a few bloggers for a collaborative giveaway? Find those your readership will connect with and pitch the idea to them! Is a blogger in your area? Shoot them a message saying “Hey, me too!” Are you in love with a blogger’s web design? Let them know! It never ceases to amaze me how friendly and welcoming bloggers are. Remember they are in the same boat as you and love to be acknowledged.
Promote your fellow bloggers.
Cat of KittyKittyLaLa is a shining example with her promotion of the Instagram #letsbelivin challenge. She took it upon herself to discuss the hashtag and its benefits several times on her blog and she regularly tweets about it. This sort of kindness blows me away. Take full advantage of social media platforms to share your favorite posts by others, announce their link-ups/giveaways, promote their hashtags, etc. Give shout outs on your blog! It is so true that what goes around comes around. Promoting others is an excellent way to establish/maintain strong relationships and it shows you are someone others want to get to know.
Go a little further than just commenting.
I know there is big hype around commenting—and it’s for very good reason because it is essential for building a blog network. However, commenting on a bunch of different blogs you fleetingly come across is not the most effective method to connect with others. You want to establish relationships with these bloggers, right? Become a reoccurring commenter (which transitions into a loyal follower). It is easiest to accomplish this if you stay organized. I recommend creating a group on Bloglovin’ and regularly add blogs that you’ve commented on, so you can easily continue checking out new posts and keep commenting.
Get to know them through their blog.
Have you read their “about me” section? Make it a habit to always read the “about me” section the moment you think, ‘Ohhh, I like this blog.’ Whatever they have written is important enough to share and it is a great starting point for you as a new reader of the blog. If the blogger directs newcomers to specific posts, read those posts! Check out their popular posts, read their comments, look at their social media platforms. Our blogs are a reflection of ourselves, so simply exploring them will help you learn about individuals’ unique journeys and voices.
Join a webinar and interact with the attendees.
I’ve only attended one webinar so far and like I’ve mentioned before, it was a game changer. Amidst the webinar’s great information, there were opportunities left and right to connect with other bloggers even after the webinar. Take the time to check out their blogs, ask them questions, and absolutely follow up with them about ideas later. I know it’s hectic during the webinar, so jot down (I use Stickies or Notepad) who you’ve talked to about what in order to remember and take action after the webinar. Those webinar chat boxes are so effective to connect with your fellow bloggers!
How are you building your blog network? I would love to hear more ideas and suggestions for everyone’s benefit! And remember, always feel free to shoot me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) because I love, love, love connecting with fellow bloggers.
